Health Promotion

Our health is shaped by how income and wealth is distributed, whether or not we are employed, and if so, the working conditions we experience. The lower a person is on scales measuring social and economic status, the poorer the person’s health is (Health Nexus, 2016). Furthermore, our wellbeing is also determined by the health and social services we receive, and our ability to obtain quality education, food and housing, among other factors that are known to be called the “determinants of health.” (Mikkonen, J., & Raphael, D. (2010). Social Determinants of Health: The Canadian Facts.Toronto: York University School of Health Policy and Management.)

Health promotion aims to achieve equity in health. To do so our staff work through a health promotion approach to reduce differences in health status and ensure equal opportunities and resources to improve health outcomes for all people.

At the Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre (WBCHC), much of the work we do in the community is accomplished through community health group programs, often in partnership with others. The high level of involvement and commitment from the local community – from volunteers, local government, schools, community-based organizations, and other health and social service providers – is what enables us to offer such a wide range of programs and services to the community. For example, in partnership with the Township of Whitewater Region, we are able to continue to offer volunteer-lead fitness classes for our growing population of older adults in 5 smaller communities within our region. Other community health programs we offer include: Chef’s Corner (volunteer chef leading cooking classes for adults/older adults); Get W.I.T.H. [Walking in the Halls] It! (drop-in, indoor walking program at a local public school between January and March); Health Talks (meet with one of our Doctors and Nurses quarterly to have your health questions answered); many fitness and falls prevention classes for older adults and much more!
