Telemedicine Using The Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN)
The Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre is pleased to announce a new service, available to anyone in the community—whether you are a client or not. You may be able to receive healthcare services through a new mode of technology—video-conferencing using the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).
Telemedicine appointments are just like a regular specialist's appointment with a slight difference. Rather than being in the same room as the specialist, you would “see” your specialist on the OTN monitor and talk to him/her in real time over the secure Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) . In addition to “seeing” your specialist via telemedicine, there is specialized equipment that allows the specialist on the videoconference to listen to your heart beat and breathing using a digital stethoscope etc.
Similarly, dermatology (skin) appointments can also be done through telemedicine. This often allows for faster referrals and diagnosis. A photo of the area of concern is taken and sent through a secure internet connection to a dermatologist who views the photo and then makes a diagnosis. Their recommendation for treatment is sent back to the referring health care provider and treatment can be started. There is no fee for this service for Ontario residents covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan).
We currently provide psychiatric assessment through OTN on a monthly basis. The psychiatrist from the Royal Ottawa provides a detailed consult and develops an in-depth treatment plan.
Brenda Powers-Ross, Director of Whitwater Bromley, is promoting and coordinating this service to area health care providers, specialists and clients.
